 Day 2 Of The European Tour Our night at Grandcamp Maisy Accommodation was amazing, we both slept so well. Heading out to the Pointe du Hoc now. Halfway between Omaha Beach and Utah Beach, the Pointe du Hoc dominates the sea from its 100m vertical cliff. In February 1944, it was crowned by a German coastal battery. The Artillerymen stationed at the site belonged to the 2nd Battery of the Heeres-Küsten-Artillerie-Abteilung. For the Allies, it was necessary to seize this battery to clear the beaches called Omaha and Utah. Such was the mission entrusted to an American unit, the Provisional Ranger Group. The Pointe du Hoc is subject, in the days and months before the landing, of massive bombing. however, the position at the top of the cliff remained difficult to conquer. Day 1 Of The European Tour After our first relaxing night in Sainte Mere Eglise campsite, we began to visit the sites from D-Day in WW2. Overlooking the town square, and facing the famous church where paratrooper  John Steele’s parachute caught on the spire during the first attack. Back in the day; as a result, Steele could only observe the fighting going on below. He hung there limply for two hours, pretending to be dead before the Germans took him prisoner. Steele later escaped from the Germans and re-joined his Division when the US Troops of the 3 rd  Battalion, 505 Parachute Infantry Regiment attacked the village, capturing thirty Germans and killing another eleven.   Rob and Maurice’s European Tour There is nothing better than a tour by bike (or car) around Europe. We covered many battlefields from WW1 and WW2; our trip was a fantastic tour, very relaxing for us both. We all know biking is a relaxing, yet exhilarating pursuit; however, riding many miles per day can take its toll. Therefore, being Veterans of the military, this year we decided on a military theme, covering World Wars 1 and 2. Primarily, this was to help reduce the mileage and fatigue per day, but also to give us a number of worthwhile goals for the trip.
